What Would You Do: Raising Awareness

Complex community problems and the barriers individuals face don't go away on their own. United Way of Central Kentucky is uniquely positioned to bring together the resources of volunteer talent, funds, advocacy, expertise, businesses, government, and religious leadership to solve community challenges and put families back on a path to self-sufficiency. Take a moment to put yourself in the shoes of our nonprofit partners who work with us to achieve this goal.

United Way of Central Kentucky mobilizes a variety of resources that build the capacity of our nonprofit partners, who must all be strong and stable in order for us to work together effectively. Whether providing a full-time AmeriCorps VISTA volunteer to manage their fundraising efforts, connecting volunteers with their needs through, or coordinating free trainings for agencies, United Way goes beyond funding to provide tools that help support our community’s nonprofits.

We believe people, not just programs, are the most valuable resource of all. That's why we serve as the region's provider of the AmeriCorps VISTA program, which is a grant that provides us with support for 12 full-time members who create and expand programs that bring low-income individuals and communities out of poverty. Since UWCK and our partner agencies operate on limited budgets, VISTAs take on specific projects such as developing new marketing campaigns, recruiting volunteers, writing grants, and managing new programs which would be impossible to undertake with our current staff. This year VISTAs leveraged over $920,000 in cash and in-kind donations and recruited 1,474 volunteers who worked for 3,518 hours at a value of $74,451. Services that benefit our entire community, like 2-1-1 expansion, Radcliff's new Born Learning Trail, and free tax preparation programs are only possible because of their leadership.

Thank You for Creating Success Stories

Darla Brown, USA Cares’ Social Media/Grant Management VISTA, increased the capacity of her organization by leveraging $420,500 in cash donations this year alone- her 4th year in service to her country and community through VISTA.  The grant awards will be used to fund USA Cares’ Four Core Programs:  Combat Injured, Jobs Assistance, Emergency Assistance and Housing Assistance for post-9/11 Veterans, Soldiers and their families.  Under Darla’s management, Google AdWords has awarded $117,438 worth of in-kind advertising to the organization’s media campaigns and Twitter followers have increased by 2,836.  Darla also uses her years of experience to benefit our collective projects as UWCK's VISTA Leader. With Darla's help, USA Cares served 13,579 heroes across the country and here in UWCK's local community.
