Way to Work

United Way of Central Kentucky is bringing our community together to bridge the gap between those in need and the hundreds of job opportunities available in our region. Our Way to Work program takes poverty personally with a research based, one-on-one approach for moving families to self-sufficiency through employment. Change does not happen alone, and poverty is expensive as it hinders the growth of our local economy while employers face a shortage of reliable entry-level workers. In addition to this cost, research shows that job seekers who are chronically unemployed or underemployed face multiple barriers which may include health, childcare, and transportation challenges. Job retention and advancement are not possible unless all such barriers are improved. Through our collaboration with nonprofits and Partner Employers, Way to Work connects local businesses to prospective employees who have completed a background check, drug test, Job Readiness Workshop, and are being supported with wraparound services. Your investment will provide Way to Work Members with personalized coaching and coordinated services to help our neighbors gain and retain stable employment, while lowering the cost to our community. Together we can find a better way to address the complex issue of poverty.

The Solution: A Holistic Approach
We all win when employees succeed. A core group of employers who regularly hire entry-level workers provides a pool of opportunities for Way to Work Members, who are matched to job openings by their capabilities, background, and needs. Involvement doesn’t end once a person starts the job. Way to Work staff follow up weekly with new hires to keep them on track, then with decreasing frequency as the new employee stabilizes. Our clients are both the employers and the job seekers. This program provides qualified, stable employees to local employers, whose productivity rises and bottom line benefits from decreased turnover. We also serve the job seekers who have a chance to succeed and overcome obstacles that have held them back in the past.
