FAQ Tuesday: Who Works at the UWCK Office?

As members of the United Way of Central Kentucky team, it is our privilege to serve others and help our community attain the great things we aspire to achieve. Now that UWCK has become much more than just a fundraising organization, we have a more comprehensive approach to driving change which involves directly managing programs and initiatives.

One such program is United Way of Central Kentucky’s administration of our region’s AmeriCorps VISTA project.  AmeriCorps VISTA builds the capacity of nonprofits to fight poverty through a grant that provides us with the most valuable resource of all- people!  VISTAs, or Volunteers in Service to America, serve full-time for a year in their host nonprofit organization to create and expand programs that bring low-income individuals and communities out of poverty. VISTA members recruit volunteers, raise funds, and leverage human, financial, and material resources that are vital to our work.

Over half the positions in our office are related to the VISTA program, with members working on the following issues:

  • Volunteer Engagement
  • Financial Literacy
  • 2-1-1 Expansion
  • Housing & Homelessness
  • Resource Development/Marketing

Powering so much of our work through VISTAs projects not only keeps us focused on the most urgent challenges facing our community, but also allows us to keep operating costs low and ensure our programs are sustainable.  Members receive a modest living stipend and choice of end of service education award or cash stipend in exchange for their service, which are provided by our VISTA grant funds.  We also see value in providing the opportunities for VISTAs to gain experience through their year of service, which has been a stepping stone for many members into careers in the nonprofit world or other positions that use the skills they developed as members.  While we do have some members who renew their service for multiple years, most VISTAs serve one term which is why you will often see different people working at UWCK from year to year.  We also have VISTA positions available at partner nonprofits throughout the year, and welcome applications from anyone who may be interested in this unique and meaningful experience.  We hope you will take a moment to meet our staff and VISTAs, and we look forward to serving you however possible!

VISTA Program Highlights

Last year UWCK provided 13 VISTAs who built the capacity of 6 local nonprofits, recruiting 1,892 volunteers, and generating over 27,000 hours of service at a value of $548,641.  Last year alone, the VISTA program had a $1.1 million impact on our community and has brought over $4.7 million to the region since 2011.

Because of VISTA projects:

  • 478 children completed early childhood programs.
  • 482 economically disadvantaged individuals have improved financial knowledge.
  • 11,896 military families received assistance with 92% of those achieving financial stability.
