RSVP

RSVP recruits, trains and places individuals 55 and over at local nonprofits to offer volunteer services. When Seniors have a purpose in life, a reason to get out of bed in the morning, there are fewer incidents of depression and the overall quality of life is improved. Feeding America Kentucky's Heartland: Food Distribution and Backpack Program

Every Friday afternoon, 600 children leave school with a backpack full of food. Most of these children will get off the school-bus and enter homes that have little if any food in the cupboards or refrigerator. The food in their backpack will keep them from going hungry all weekend.

In the last decade, hunger-relief agencies have found that the greatest increase in hungry Americans has been among the working poor. People that are working, but just don’t earn livable wages. United Way wants to make sure no one suffers from hunger in our community. Through the partnership with America’s Second Harvest, over $900,000 worth of food is distributed to people in need each month. This equals 615,000 pounds/month, 17,000 families each month, 96,000 meals at various sites each month).

Proper care and stimulation during these 3 years is critical to the child’s ability to succeed in the future. Unfortunately, this age group represents the most underserved segment of the population, making them high-risk for abuse and neglect. United Way wants to see every child have an opportunity to grow up free from abuse and neglect have a chance to succeed in life. By supporting the Hardin County School System’s First Connections program, this can be a reality. The program begins preparing children from birth to be successful in school and life by empowering parents to be their child’s first and best teacher.
