Our children face more challenges today than at any time in this nation’s history.
Gang violence, drug abuse, and violence in the home have all become a part of
the fabric of our community. United Way wants to find a way to protect our
children from these conditions. United Way’s support of Big Brothers Big Sisters
provides our youth with a positive force in their lives. National research has
shown that the positive relationships between Big Brothers and Big Sisters
and their Little’s have a direct, measurable, and lasting impact on
children’s lives.

Central Kentucky Senior Corps:
Senior Companion Program (SCP) & Retired Senior Volunter Program (RSVP)
The average Senior Citizen spends over $2400 out-of-pocket each year on
prescription medication and medical care. Seniors living on fixed incomes often have
to choose between buying their medication or buying food. To offer Senior’s some relief,
United Way of Central Kentucky began funding a program through Central Kentucky Community Action Senior Corps which provides Senior’s with free or reduced rate
prescriptions. In 2006, this program saved local Senior Citizens over $1.2 million.
When Senior’s have a purpose in life, a reason to get out of bed in the morning, there
are fewer incidents of depression and the overall quality of life is improved. Retired
Senior Volunteer program provides seniors with meaningful volunteer opportunities,
moving them from the sidelines of society to becoming a positive force within it.

Feeding America:
Kentucky's Heartland Food Distribution Program & Back Pack Program
Every Friday afternoon, 600 children leave school with a backpack full of food.
Most of these children will get off the school-bus and enter homes that have
little if any food in the cupboards or refrigerator. The food in their backpack
will keep them from going humgry all weekend.
In the last decade, hunger-relief agencies have found that the greatest increase
in hungry Americans has been among the working poor. People that are working,
but just don’t earn livable wages. United Way wants to make sure no one suffers
from hunger in our community. Through the partnership with America ’s Second
Harvest, over $900,000 worth of food is distributed to people in need each month.
This equals 615,000 pounds/month, 17,000 families each month, 96,000 meals at various sites each month).

Hardin County School System: First Connections
According to recent research, the first 3 years of a child’s life are the most important
period of brain development. Proper care and stimulation during these 3 years is critical
to the child’s ability to succeed in the future. Unfortunately, this age group represents
the most underserved segment of the population, making them high-risk for abuse and
neglect. United Way wants to see every child have an opportunity to grow up free
from abuse and neglect have a chance to succeed in life. By supporting the Hardin
County School System, First Connections program, this can be a reality. The program
begins preparing children from birth to be successful in school and life by empowering
parents to be their child’s first and best teacher.

is fear. United Way wants everyone to live a life free of abuse and fear. By
supporting SpringHaven Domestic Violence Program, victims of abuse can find a
