Vis-ta noun ’vis-ta Volunteers In Service To America
United Way of Central Kentucky is proud to be the managing partner
of the AmeriCorps VISTA program with The Corporation of National
and Community Service.
The goal of the AmeriCorps VISTA is — Working to Provide Long-term
Solutions to Poverty. AmeriCorps VISTA provides full-time members to
nonprofit, faith-based and other community organizations, and public
agencies to create and expand programs that bring low-income
individuals and communities out of poverty.
VISTA members leverage human, financial, and material resources to
increase the capacity of thousands of low-income areas across the
country to address challenges and improve their lives and communities.
VISTAs leave behind lasting solutions to some of our country’s toughest problems.
There are 12 VISTAs placed at 7 sites in our communities:
- Army Volunteer Corps
- Big Brothers Big Sisters
- Grayson County School District - Community Education
- Hardin County School District – Meadow View, Radcliff and Woodland Elementary Schools
- Helping Hand of Hope
- United Way of Central Kentucky
- USA Cares

VISTA Spotlight
Ashley Orr
“My passions are
education, working with kids, and service, so I became a VISTA at Big
Brothers Big Sisters in order to impact youth
and communities in a
positive way, outside of the typical classroom setting I was
used to. I am most proud of the quality of work I do at Big
Brothers Big Sisters. I strive to treat each family and "Little"
with as much care and flexibility as I can, which means holding
meetings on evenings or weekends, or driving to the family's home if
needed. I also make sure to support my volunteers, "Bigs,"
in the best possible way, as I want them to know how much their
service and dedication to our agency and their Little is appreciated!
I see this experience as much more than a year of service to my
community; it's allowing me to find clarity in my educational and
future goals.”
